The history of this website

This website originally existed as www.scambuster419.co.uk, from 2003 until around 2008. During that time, I updated the website frequently with details of Gilbert's latest exploits. It was a hugely popular website at the time. However, life moves on, and when the scambuster419.co.uk domain came up for renewal, I let the domain and web hosting lapse and gradually forgot about it.

I recently found out, to my great surprise, that the website hadn't died completely when I had let things lapse. Unbeknownst to me, two different individuals had uploaded their own copies of the website, to keep it available for viewing. I have no idea how long these website copies have been available. One of the website copies even has the original URL - www.scambuster419.co.uk. However, when I inspected these websites, I discovered that neither one is complete; a large number of pages are missing completely, and various links do not work.

I enjoyed revisiting Gilbert's misadventures... so much so, that I decided to resurrect the website in its entirety. As the original domain is now taken, I registered a new one - www.gilbertmurray.co.uk - and that is what you are now viewing. Now, for the first time in years, you once more have access to the complete, original, unabridged adventures of Gilbert Murray and his motley crew of deranged assistants.

I hope that a new generation will now be able to enjoy keeping up with Gilbert's antics in the world of the advance fee fraudster. Time moves on, scamming techniques move on... but humour is a constant. Enjoy!

See a 419 scammer caught on camera!

Gilbert has managed to lure an advance fee fraudster to two separate meetings in front of a London webcam. A number of people have been in contact, asking for advice on the classified advertisement scams that are becoming increasingly more common. Some people are concerned that there is something fishy about their potential purchaser and want to find out if they are in danger of being scammed; other people have actually been scammed in this way.

A 419 scammer sends money to Gilbert!

After persuading a 419 scammer to spend an entire week going from bank to bank, desperately trying to find one that would accept a succession of extremely dubious payment slips, Gilbert managed to turn the tables on the scammer: he persuaded the scammer to send money to HIM via Western Union, rather than the other way round!

After a catalogue of failed transfers to the scammer which Gilbert blamed on network problems, Gilbert suggested that the scammer send him the money to check that the Western Union network was now operating without any problems. Almost unbelievably, the scammer complied. Click here to read the whole story.

The cash, incidentally, has been donated to Cancer Research UK. I'm sure that the scammer would be delighted if he knew that his money had gone towards a good cause.

Quite a few people have been in touch asking for more information on the various ways in which Gilbert "sends money" to scammers. I have to admit that I hadn't heard of Western Union until I was introduced to the world of the 419 scam.
